Book Review: Poison Study by Maria V Snyder

BOOK ONE

**Possible spoilers ahead. You have been warned**

This is the second time I've read Poison Study and I do remember loving it the first time.
Don't question why I didn't continue with the series, that's a bad habit of mine.
The second time around I still loved it, don't get me wrong, but I don't think I loved it the same way. Or maybe I just remember the good and not the bad.

I'm going to say what I didn't like at the beginning of the review...
I can't stand the whole getting rid of the monarchy and saying they were evil, because from what I'm seeing after the take over, it seems that the Commander and his generals also seem pretty corrupt to me too.
They try to convince us that the Commander is better cause he allowed women in charge, but that doesn't convince me that he is a nice guy. There were way too many occasions where he was an absolute arsehole. And not trying to spoil anything, but I think there is a very big reason why he allowed women to be more in charge. And if you know his big secret, which is so odd by the way, then it probably explains the more women roles.
And why, pray tell, would you keep staff that used to work for the King, especially the chef.
I also don't like the whole, well you are evil cause you killed for the King. While simultaneously having a job killing for the Commander.
Commander is just another word for King really. Different sort of monarchy.

Okay, okay, enough of the things I don't like, now onto the things I enjoyed.
I actually loved reading about Yelena. Her character building and what she went through was horrific, then ending up as the Commanders food taster, which I also enjoyed reading about. I actually wished there was more about poisons and the details about it. It felt like the author skimmed most of it just to get to other points of the story.
I just thought being a food taster and trying to determine if it's poisoned and what poison it is, is fascinating to me.

I also really enjoyed Maria V Snyder's writing. Captivated me right from the beginning straight to the end. I need to know more from this series. That's why I never understood why I don't continue with series that I enjoyed.

Review over, now to finally read the next book in the series. Fingers crossed it's gets better from here.

Until next time, happy reading
